Music Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

We want every child to develop a genuine love and appreciation for music, and to see it as a special way to express themselves, connect with others, and find joy. Our hope is that children leave Sudell with happy musical memories, greater confidence, and the belief that music is for everyone to enjoy and share.

Our music curriculum follows the National Curriculum and is carefully designed to give every child the chance to sing, listen, perform, compose, and grow their musical skills. We are passionate about making music accessible to all, no matter where each child begins their musical journey.

Music also extends beyond dedicated lessons. Wherever appropriate, we use music to enrich learning across the curriculum, helping children make connections, remember what they’ve learned, and experience each subject in creative, memorable ways.

Implementation

Singing is at the heart of life at Sudell. Our weekly whole-school singing assemblies bring everyone together, building a strong sense of belonging and community while helping children grow in confidence and enjoy performing as part of a group.

We are also proud to offer specialist Whole Class Instrumental Tuition (WOP) delivered in partnership with Lancashire Music Service, giving children the opportunity to learn and perform together:

• Year 4 – Ukulele
• Year 5 – Samba
• Year 6 – Music Technology

These opportunities encourage children to explore a wide range of musical styles and instruments, and to try out different ways of making music together. Along the way, they build important life skills like listening, teamwork, perseverance and performance.

We also love giving children the chance to perform beyond the classroom. Whether it’s large events like Young Voices, Raise the Roof or Let’s Go Sing, or smaller performances throughout the year, these experiences help children grow in confidence and celebrate their achievements.

Impact

Children progressively develop their ability to sing, play instruments, compose, listen and respond to music. They build their musical vocabulary and understanding while learning to appreciate music from a variety of styles, traditions and cultures.

At Sudell, the impact of music goes far beyond learning notes and skills. By singing, performing and making music together, children develop confidence, resilience, teamwork, creativity and a real sense of belonging.

Most importantly, we want our children to connect music with happiness, togetherness and positive experiences. Whether they’re singing with the whole school, learning an instrument, composing their own tunes or performing for others, we hope every child feels the joy that music can bring.

At Sudell, music isn’t just a subject - it’s part of who we are.
