Year 5
Welcome to Year 5!
We are so excited to be sharing this year with your children and getting to know each of them as individuals.
Our biggest priority is that every child in our class feels happy, safe, valued and believed in. We want children to know that it is okay to find things difficult sometimes, that they can always ask for help and that we will be there to support and encourage them along the way.
Year 5 will undoubtedly bring challenges, but it will also bring lots of laughter, new friendships, exciting learning and moments to be proud of. We will celebrate the little steps just as much as the big achievements and encourage every child to believe in what they are capable of.
We are really looking forward to working alongside you and your children and making Year 5 a happy, memorable and successful year for everyone.
Year 5 is an exciting year where children have lots of opportunities to grow in confidence, become more independent and discover new things. We have a busy and engaging curriculum planned, with plenty of opportunities for children to be curious, creative and challenged in their learning.
We encourage children to have a go, ask questions and understand that making mistakes is an important part of learning. Every child is different, and we will always do our very best to make sure that children feel supported while also encouraging them to challenge themselves and be proud of what they achieve.
Most importantly, we want our classroom to be a place where children feel happy, safe and excited to learn. We cannot wait to see how much they grow throughout the year!
Reading is a really important part of life in Year 5 and something we want our children to enjoy and feel excited about.
Each child will have a reading book and reading record to bring home. We ask that children read at home at least three times each week and that an adult records this in their reading record. Reading records will be checked regularly in school.
Children will also have opportunities to enjoy their books during the school day, so please make sure that reading books and reading records are brought into school every day.
Reading together at home, talking about books and asking children about what they are reading can make such a difference. Even as children become more independent readers, they still really benefit from sharing books and discussing them with an adult.
Children can earn special ‘DidiDot’ stickers for completing their home learning – one for reading at least three times during the week and another for completing their maths, grammar and spelling activities.
The stickers will be added to our classroom chart and children who collect all 30 stickers by the end of the term will earn special treat tokens! These can be ‘cashed in’ for some exciting rewards.
We want homework to be a positive experience, so if your child is ever finding something particularly tricky, please let us know. We would much rather they ask for help than worry about getting something wrong.
Being confident with times tables makes such a difference to children’s maths as they move through Year 5 and towards Year 6.
Children will have their own TT Rock Stars login details so they can practise at home. Short, regular bursts of practice are often much more effective than one long session – even 5–10 minutes at a time can make a big difference.
We will also practise times tables regularly in school and celebrate children as they improve. The focus is not on comparing children with one another, but on helping every child make progress from their own starting point and feel increasingly confident with their number facts.
Year 5 will have PE on Mondays and Fridays. On these days, children should come to school wearing their full school PE uniform only.
Please make sure that long hair is tied back and that earrings are removed so that everyone can take part safely.
Throughout the year, children will experience a wide variety of PE topics and activities, giving everyone opportunities to develop new skills, work as part of a team, stay active and, most importantly, enjoy PE!
We know that children have different strengths and levels of confidence when it comes to sport, so we encourage everyone to join in, have a go and celebrate their own progress.
We truly believe that children thrive when home and schoolwork together.
You know your child better than anyone, and we really value the relationship we build with our Year 5 families. If there is ever anything happening that may affect your child in school, or if you have a question or concern, please feel that you can come and speak to us.
Equally, we love sharing the positives! We want to celebrate children's successes both inside and outside school, whether that is an achievement in their learning, mastering a new skill, showing kindness to somebody else or something they are particularly proud of.
